Summary Notifications

Last updated: April 21, 2026

Stay informed about your team's engineering activity without having to check the dashboard. Span's summary notifications deliver automated digests directly to your inbox or Slack channel, surfacing key metrics, target statuses, and areas that may need your attention.

Summary notifications are off by default. You can enable any of the digests below in Personal Settings → Notifications.

Notification Types

Span offers three types of summary notifications:

📧 Manager Weekly Wrap (Email)

A weekly roundup of engineering insights, completed work, and team member activity. This digest helps managers stay up to date with their team's output and identify people or work that may warrant a follow-up conversation.

📧 Manager Target Digest (Email)

A scheduled email summarizing the current status of your team's targets. It highlights any lapses or regressions, making it easy to identify areas that need investigation before they become larger issues.

💬 Team Slack Digest (Slack)

A Slack message sent to a channel of your choice, listing actionable lapses and the current status of each team target. Useful for surfacing engineering health data directly where your team already communicates.

Configurable

  • Schedules are set using a cron expression picker, supporting daily, weekly, biweekly, or custom patterns.

  • All schedules respect your preferred timezone — no more notifications arriving at odd hours.

  • You can send a test notification at any time to preview the format before enabling regular delivery.

Who Receives Notifications

  • Managers can subscribe to the Manager Weekly Wrap and Manager Target Digest for their teams.

  • Team leads can configure the Team Slack Digest for their team's Slack channel.

  • Additional recipients — you can add extra email addresses to any email digest, so other stakeholders receive a copy as well.

Access to configure certain digest types is controlled by your role in Span.

Setting Up Notifications

Navigate to Personal Settings → Notifications to manage your subscriptions.

For Email Digests:

  1. Toggle the digest on using the switch.

  2. Choose your preferred schedule using the cron picker (Manager Target Digest).

  3. Select your timezone.

  4. Optionally, add additional recipient email addresses.

  5. Use Send Test Email to verify the content and formatting.

For Slack Digests:

  1. Select the Slack channel you want to post to from the dropdown.

  2. Toggle the digest on.

  3. Configure your preferred schedule and timezone.

Using a private channel? Invite the Span Slack bot to the channel first, then it will appear as an option in the dropdown.

Managing Your Subscriptions

  • Pause a notification at any time without losing your configuration — simply resume it when you're ready.

  • Update schedules on the fly; changes take effect immediately without needing to resubscribe.

  • Disable any digest at any time by toggling it off.

Tips

  • If you manage multiple teams, consider setting up separate digests per team with distinct schedules to avoid information overload.

  • Use the Manager Target Digest early in the week (Monday morning is the default) so you can address any lapses in your first team sync.

  • The Team Slack Digest works best in a dedicated engineering health or team standup channel where the whole team can see target status at a glance.
